Anyone practice with BB or pellet Pistols
I have been reading that a lot of match competeiors use BB or pellet pistols and practice every day. Is this a good way to stay in practice without paying a fortune? If so what pistol is the most used?

Airsoft is a great addition to ones practice tool box also. The green gas guns are almost identical in size, weight and dimension and can be found in most actual gun models. You can shoot for fractional pennies on the dollar and I have found that it is an excellent tool for getting the first time shooter prepared for using the real thing. Force on force options are also quite fun and realistic.

Re: Anyone practice with BB or pellet Pistols
When I was little, we shot bb guns, the rule was, we could not shoot each other, however, when someone walked by the bee hive, we could shoot the hive. Needless to say, the bee's sting hurt worse than a bb.
I practice with a 22 pistol and rifle. Ammo is cheap enough! |

Got my daughter an Crossman Airsoft last year, her choice. I wanted to get her a Red Rider, but she wanted a pistol.

Re: Anyone practice with BB or pellet Pistols
I shoot pistol in competition - have for about 15 years now......back 10 years ago I got a reasonable quality air pistol....about $200 at the time......you need to buy something of pretty good quality as if you know how to shoot very well at all...you will quickly be able to outshoot the lower quality non accurate pistol.....
Prior to the air pistol at home....I'd only get a chance to shoot once a week perhaps twice a week......I was pretty good at the time....but after the air pistol and the ability to shoot every day ......I got a lot better in about 3 months of mostly every day shooting....about 30 minutes to 1 hr a day......it allowed me to rise to an expert classification in NRA Conventional Pistol (bullseye) and I also started to shoot olympic sytle International Pistol events.....a few years ago I took 2nd place in the state championship for International Pistol. The point being - you can become very good by using an air pistol. High quality skill development at slow fire.....single shot fire......is the foundation to timed and rapid fire shooting skills......once you become an excellent slow fire shooter....it is very easy to transfer that over to rapid fire. I have a range in my basement......I have an old TV and a closed circuit camera (got it on Ebay for $20)......I have the camera down at the target and cable signal back to the TV.....so the TV is on the shooting bench and serves as a "Spotting Scope".....I can shoot and not get out of position and just glance down and see my shot/score very easily.....this allows me to "call my shot"....this is key in becoming a much better shot....you will learn from your mistakes. Pistol and rifle training at home is a very low cost activity and you become as good as you like.....this is exactly how every championship winner i have ever met does it......lots of trigger time...... Train hard enough and you can become the world champion in your basement in Flint Michigan....or New York....or Germany or China.....this is what the shooters at this level are doing.....it is fun to try for an improved personal best....you look forward to shooting every day...it becomes a habit..... Also - get one book for about $10....it has everything you will ever need to learn fro experts from champion shooters from the 50's, 60' and 70's.....it is called "The Pistol Shooters Treasury" by Gil Hebard. About a 160 page book.....best book on pistol shooting ever written.....google it - if you can't find it....let me know and I'll help....there are a few places like Champions Choice that have it......Gil Hebard is still alive at 90+ and has a shop in Knoxville, Ill.....he was a national champion at one time and put the book together in the 70's ....he still has copies at his shop.... Here is the best place to buy your equipment.....they specialize in olympic/top quality shooting gear..... http://www.pilkguns.com/ Daisy has a few pistols under $200......there is a Russian made IZH 46M for under $400. Beeman had/has a pistol called a P1, a P2 and a P3...they were in the $250 - $400 range. You can spend over $2000 on the very best air pistol. Get the Daisy as a starter..... http://www.pilkguns.com/entrylevelap.shtml Just for fun....here are the $2000 guns......not long ago these were $1000 - $1200....top quality European competition pistols have been very good inflation hedge investments. http://www.pilkguns.com/worldclassap.shtml |

If you're into defense training, get a copy of your carry unit. That said, I recently bought an el cheapo gas powered airsoft carry (near) copy. I very much like it. The 6mm BB's I got are biodegradable....and not too accurate. Broken BBs have shown sizeable voids. No matter to me. At aboot 25 feet I can hit pop cans with regularity. I only need "accurate enough" for self-protection range. For less than a bill I get to *shoot* a very close approximation of my little friend. I'm jazzed about it enough that I fully intend to transition into airsoft for rifle as well......plus the full auto might be fun...... |

We use one to discourage moose from trampling the garden.

Re: Anyone practice with BB or pellet Pistols
I've been shooting competitively since I was 7, so for about 16 years now. My first handgun experience was with a daisy 777, and it's a good little gun to work on marksmanship with. Currently I have a Desert Eagle Blowback .177 cal Pellet Pistol, it's a nice replica of my .50 Desert Eagle. The advantage is that even though I live in the People's Republic of Madison, I can actually shoot in my apartment. I have a pellet trap that I made and a long hallway to practice in. I find that when I practice with a pellet gun I can get back to the basics of trigger pull and follow through and eliminate bad habits like flinching.
